Welcome to Dreaming in Silver Halide

Hello, and welcome to my little corner of the internet.  I'd like to thank you for taking a little time out of your busy day to share it with me.  Since this is my first post here, I'll share with you why I have started this blog and what I hope to accomplish here.

Let me start by talking about the title and what it means to me.  Silver Halide is the life blood of photography.  It is the compound that records the light on both film and paper.  It is something that is often overlooked and forgotten in today's digital world.  Too often are pictures taken, downloaded to a computer and shoved to the back of the hard drive to be forgotten.  The lucky pictures are made into a cel phone wallpaper or posted to photoshop.  The silver halide print, on the other hand, is something physical.  It is something that exists.  It can be passed around a room or hung on a wall for all to see.

Not to long ago I celebrated my grandparents sixtieth anniversary.  At the party everyone gathered around and looked at the photo albums that chronicled their life together.  That got me thinking.  When I reach that point in my life, will I have something to pull out and show my children and their children, or will I have a pile of dvd's and hard drives sitting on the table and nothing on which they can be viewed?

Photography has long been one of my hobbies.  I have used point and shoot and SLR, film and digital, automatic and manual.  I have shot Mount Kilimanjaro from the window of an airplane and I have shot fish a hundred feet below the surface of the ocean.  I try to make every click of the shutter better than the last.

Most importantly, I enjoy sharing the pictures I take, and the stories that go along with those pictures.  That is the ultimate purpose of this blog.  Once again, I thank you for joining me in this exploration of photography.
